Nature is boring. @J@JeffOSealnature

Summary

A picture of Half Dome is good enough. That's the stance of one city-loving rider who tells Kareem that nature is fundamentally boring and there's no reason to visit places like the Grand Canyon or Joshua Tree when you can just look at a photo. The Pyramids, though? Those are worth seeing because they're man-made. The rider's main complaint about hiking is the absence of animals, if you could animal-watch in nature the way you people-watch in the city, that'd be different, but wild encounters never seem to happen. Even while camping in Marin with views of distant city lights, all they could think was "I would rather be where the lights are." Central Park works because you can still see the buildings. An empty alley off Canal Street that's been in movies? That's their babbling brook. Kareem's response: "Touch grass.

So, what's your take? Nature is boring. 100% disagree. What? I can see a picture of Half Dome and that's good enough for me. I don't need to actually go and see Half Dome in person.

A picture is good enough? Yes.

Do the Pyramids count? No, that's man-made. That I would like to see. But I went to Joshua Tree once. It's very beautiful. Uh, but like, I can get out of the car, look at it, and be like, that's fine. I don't need to go—

[laughter] —and look at more rocks. Like, I get the gist of it.

What about like the Grand Canyon? Again, a picture will do. You know what I'm saying? Here's the other thing. Where's all the animals? You know what I'm saying? I went hiking the other day. There's not one animal. If you could go sit on a bench in nature and animal watch the same way you could people watch in the city, I'd be into that.

That's called going to the zoo. But, but wild. It has to be wild. I just never see any animals.

So, has it ever happened where you see a picture and you go, "I do want to see that in real life?" Not really. I mean, no. I was camping in Marin Bay, right? At night when it got dark, I can see like the lights of the city. The entire time I'm just like, "I would rather be where the lights are. Why am I in a tent?" You know what I'm saying? Like, I want to be at a bar. I can, you know, take a shower afterwards. Look, I like nature. I have nothing against it. Like, people like to conserve nature, me too. You're pro that.

I'm pro-conserving nature. It, we need it. But the most nature I really need is like Prospect Park or Central Park.

Right. And the best part about Central Park is that you can still see the buildings. I like that part.

[laughter] And I'm more into the buildings, like the old architecture. Like, there's an alley off of Canal Street, right? It's been in a bunch of movies. It's very empty. To me, that's my babbling brook. That I love. You know what I'm saying? That is good.

Nature is boring is the craziest thing I've ever heard. It's true, though.

Touch grass. Touch grass. Touch grass. I don't need to touch grass.
