If someone wants to become a DJ, they have to earn a degree
Summary
A straphanger has a bold proposal: DJs should be required to earn degrees before they can spin records. Not just any degree, but a specialized DJ diploma involving at least three years of study covering music history and research. The reasoning? There are too many bad DJs out there treating it like a side hobby. Kareem discovers his conversation partner is actually a DJ himself, though one without formal training. They workshop the economics together, suggesting DJ school should cost $10,000 a year while other degrees in Europe remain free. Why? To filter out the uncommitted. The kicker: this DJ admits he knows other DJs aren't really doing anything when they perform, and he's ready to open his own DJ university with Kareem as a teacher.

So what's your take? If someone wants to become a DJ, uh they have to uh earn a degree just like a doctor would have to before they enter into DJ, but not a DJ degree. A DJ degree. Oh, they enter it. I 100% agree. Every DJ should go to DJ school, graduate, get a diploma for you. For me, that means that you're committed.
Exactly. And it's not like a little side hobby. There's too many DJs out there. We can all agree.
We can all agree that and a lot of them are really bad. And I think uh they have to go to school for at least 3 years and they have to study like the history of music. They have to study like digging research. So they're not learning how to do this. No, they they they can they can I hate when DJs do this?
Yeah, me too. Cuz as a DJ, I know that they're not doing anything. You're a DJ?
Yeah. Did you get a degree? No. It's a really great idea because you go to music school to get a degree in composition, to get a degree in music writing. Why can't you get a degree in DJ? That's why we need to ask uh the government to establish that. You know, the government, how much would tuition be? Would it be the same as any other school?
Actually, in Europe, uh university is kind of free everywhere. Oh, I forgot we're in Europe. Free everywhere. But to avoid having too many DJs, maybe we should make it like uh that you have to pay for it. So all the other I want to be a doctor.
Cool. Go to school. It's free. I want to be a lawyer. Cool. Go to school. It's free. I want to be a DJ.
$10,000 a year. Exactly. I agree with you 100%. I like it. DJ school. Come to my school. I'm I'm going to open one.
Yeah. I should be a teacher. No, no, no. In your school.
Okay. The owner. I'll be the teacher.
Great. This is how you do it. Yeah.
