Emily DiDonato — Fashion Shows Should Be Longer

Feb 8, 2025 · 1:57

Summary

Emily DiDonato thinks fashion shows should be longer. Much longer. The model makes her case to Kareem: after spending hours in hair, makeup, and styling, the actual runway walk lasts only five minutes. Her solution? Two laps, maybe three. She wants to soak up the excitement, the lights, the music. Kareem teases out what he imagines models do after shows: head to Bazaar for Seafood Towers, down some oysters and Aperol Spritzes with their model friends, then fly to Paris for cappuccinos and more oysters. "That's so many oysters," DiDonato protests. But she's serious about extending the most thrilling part of the job. When Kareem asks if this is turning into a therapy session, she leans in: "I want to get on the train. I want to do my job. I want to eat Seafood Towers." The conversation shifts when Kareem admits he's never actually been to a fashion show, prompting DiDonato to demand designers invite him. His response? He's not sure he wants all those invites.

So, what's your take? Fashion shows should be longer? 100% disagree. Longer, longer. Why do you need a long fashion show?

Okay, I can speak to this because I've been a model for many years and I've attended many fashion shows. You spend hours in hair, makeup, styling, manicures, and then the show is only five minutes long. I think they should do another lap. Two laps, three— Three laps. As a model, I'd want to keep the clothes on even longer. So do another lap. We can watch longer, admire the clothes. But as a model, you might as well do your job, do the walk.

Yeah, you know, look swaggy. Yeah. And then just go home, go have a Seafood Tower, a bélaire, whatever you models do. You think that's what models do?

I think models walk the show and then they all get together, they go to Bazaar, they have a Seafood Tower, maybe two. Yeah, eat oysters, maybe drink Aperol Spritzes, hang out with their other model friends and then go watch a fashion show. That's what I think models do. A life of a model. And then they fly to Paris the next day and then they take a walk, they have a cappuccino, uh, maybe have more oysters.

Oh, more. That's so many oysters. I don't know.

What's your day like? Anyway, back to my point about fashion shows being longer. The other thing is that's the most exciting part is being on the runway. So why would you not want to extend that for as long as possible? That's when, you know, things heat up. It's so exciting. The lights are on, the music, and then it's so short.

So you love your job? I do love my job. I don't want to be on the train. That's the difference. Is that I want to get on the train.

Is this a therapy session? Yes, go on, go on. I want to get on the train. I want to do my job. I want to eat Seafood Towers. I want to eat oysters. I want to eat steak fries.

So it's your dream life? That you're—

Okay, I get what you're saying. You don't want to go in and out. You're saying I've done all this prep, I might as well soak up the moment, soak up the energy. I want to shine.

Are you going to any shows? I am probably going to go to a couple of shows this week, for sure. And I love attending them too. I love watching them.

And you want to stay for longer? I want to stay for longer and I want to watch for longer. When I'm watching, I've never been to a fashion show.

I think you need to go. Like, tell the people right now, please invite me to your fashion show. I don't know if I want all those invites.
